As a member of this congregation, you have probably, at one time or another, taken part in meaningful worship, heard inspiring preaching and experienced the hopeful, welcoming energy of the Holy Spirit moving in this place. If you are a younger member, you or your children may have been involved in our strong Sunday school program. If you are older, you may have felt God’s love extended during difficult times. You may have participated in one of St. Stephen’s recent spiritual growth opportunities such as Backyard, Beer, and Bonhoeffer discussions, racial awareness programs, and the study of Acts.
People of all ages and abilities make St. Stephen’s a vibrant congregation with so much to offer. And the need is great – in Monona, in Madison, in our country, and in places as far removed as Palestine and the Middle East.
St. Stephen’s needs your help! The Holy Spirit has called us together to be the church in this time and place. And so, with the guidance of the Spirit, we are called and sometimes challenged as we look toward the future. This year, our passion for mission and ministry has outpaced our finances. Our income has not kept pace with the expenses resulting in a $26,000 deficit. We need to address this deficit now in order to keep our spiritual momentum and ministries moving forward.
One simple and tangible way to close this gap of our deficit is if everyone doubled their giving for just one month! Therefore, we are asking you to double your giving during the month of October to help close this gap of ministry and finance. If your monthly offering is $200, in October commit to $400. If this increase would be difficult to do in one month’s time, spread out the amount over two or three months (for ex. If your monthly offering is $200, add $67/month October through December).
Ten households of the Ministry Board, the Finance Committee, and the Stewardship Team have already committed to doubling their giving for October! Please prayerfully consider doing the same as well as making a continuing commitment to faithful worship. We all need the strength of God’s Word and the power of God’s unfailing love, which is so generously given to the world and us.
Please consider being a part of this challenge by returning the commitment card enclosed with this letter. You may either mail it to the church office (with the return envelope) or place it in the offering on Sunday morning.
Thank you for your ongoing commitment and giving to the life and ministry of this congregation. Together we are making a difference!
Let us continue to “Do all the good we can, by all the means we can, in all the ways we can, in all the places we can, at all the times we can, to all the people we can, as long as ever we can.” (Wesley)
Together in Christ,
The Ministry Board
